Intelligent Control
Control systems that combine feedback with structured knowledge, approximate reasoning, online adaptation, or learned models — while keeping authority, timing, stability evidence, and safety constraints explicit.

Intelligent control is an architecture, not a magic controller class. It separates fast feedback, state estimation, world modeling, planning, value or risk judgment, and supervisory decisions by authority and timescale so that sophisticated reasoning cannot silently violate the contracts of the physical loop.

Knowledge-Based Supervisory & Expert Control

An expert controller represents operational knowledge as facts, rules, priorities, and explanations, then uses that knowledge to select modes, setpoints, or bounded procedures. It is strongest above fast regulatory loops, where decisions are discrete and auditable; it becomes dangerous when rule execution is allowed to bypass timing and safety contracts.

Fuzzy Sets, Linguistic Variables & Approximate Reasoning

A fuzzy set assigns each element a graded membership in a concept such as “warm” or “fast.” Fuzzy inference composes these grades through explicitly chosen operators; it models vagueness in category boundaries, not randomness, evidence strength, or statistical probability.

Fuzzy Modeling, Identification & Control

Fuzzy models blend local rules into a nonlinear input-output map. Mamdani systems preserve linguistic consequents and require defuzzification; Takagi-Sugeno systems blend numerical local models. Neither form guarantees a good model or a stable loop without identification discipline and closed-loop analysis.
Adaptation & Learning

Adaptive Control, Self-Tuning & Gain Scheduling

Adaptive control changes controller parameters online from measured behavior; self-tuning control identifies a plant and redesigns the controller; gain scheduling selects or interpolates predesigned controllers from an operating variable. These mechanisms address changing dynamics, but none makes stability automatic.

Neural System Identification & Learning-Enabled Control

Neural networks can model nonlinear dynamics, estimate hidden state, correct a nominal model, or produce control actions. Their approximation power is useful only when temporal data, rollout validation, closed-loop distribution shift, actuator constraints, and stability evidence are treated as control problems rather than ordinary supervised learning.
